Pierre Jardin's first statement of "rock on" was another rebus where "rock" was written with a simple stone standing in for the word.
Then new opportunities presented themselves When Pierre balanced one large piece of pink granite on another one that served as its base.
This pairing gave "rock on" a literal sense, one rock upon another. Jardin made a petriverse in which the word rock was on the word on and the shape of the words mimicked the shape of the sculpture.
The literal self-reference of stones and words was iterated into its simplest form: "rock. on."
Finally, Jardin returned to the original sense of the statement, and extended the sense of the spirit of perseverance to the "keep calm" meme.
