When the stones were packed up and safely returned to the Petriverse, Pierre Jardin performed a series of experiments combining those stones with other materials, giving a title to each display. This process proved to be an extended investigation into the balance points and relations among different large stones, as well as the aesthetic qualities of different compositions and displays.
The "Caption-Stone" seen below was deployed at different time as the installation evolved. The images below capture evolving displays November 2017 - June 2018. This iteration hinges on "striking" functioning as a verb or an adjective: as verb, "striking" imagines the display elements as figures contorting themselves in distinct positions to create a particular effect; as adjective, it alludes to the impressive nature of the compositions. This title names the labor of clams (boring) and relative softness on the Mohs scale of the stones (absorbing), while contrasting the monotony of carving with the attention-grabbing holey textures the clams produce. This iteration punningly parallels the skill needed to stabilize stones atop one another and a life-philosophy of discernment. This version is addressed to an audience of hipsters and other locals who frequent spontaneous stores and once-off events. The rocks hanging out at the top of the display POP to the eye the way such shops and happenings POP up and then disappear. A tribute to the celebrity status of stunning stones and the transformation of ship-shaped rocks into vehicles for space travel.
