The Petriverse of Pierre Jardin: by Paul A. Harris

Artist's Statement

The Petriverse of Pierre Jardin cements a breccia with traditions by cobbling together conglomerate materials, composing a speculative landscape nestled among the terroirs of rock-gardening, geophysics, eco-philosophy, concrete poetry, and land art. In mining this site you will unearth materials that run in several veins, from a petric poetics of rockery reveries to a stoned thinking of Anthropocene temporality, from Chinese scholars' rocks to California geology, from Daoism to Ignatian spirituality. These heterogeneous pursuits and practices comprise Pierre Jardin's apprenticeship to stone, a learning process involving listening to stone, reading and working with rocks, thinking and writing with stone.

"The Petriverse of Pierre Jardin" denominates different denotations. Physically, it names a revelatory rock garden, a geo-ode written in stone. Figuratively, The Petriverse refers to the lithic universe that Pierre Jardin creates through labor, study, and writing. Deictically, The Petriverse of Pierre Jardin designates this digital project, which is presented as a virtual rock garden of forking paths. Navigation entails bifurcation and feeds on free-association. In the sage words of baseball sage Yogi Berra, "if you come to a fork in the road, take it." Meander through this labyrinth secure in knowing that you are always on the right (or left) path, and there need not be a final destination.
