Presumably the lines are caused by mineral processes occurring during the region's cycles of subduction and uplift, erosion and re-deposition. The white oval ring around the peak of this pyramidical mudstone rock resembles another 'nothing' written in stone as a zero.
Playing off traditional viewing stone displays, Pierre Jardin set the stone in sand in a white marble tray, alongside a text that invites the viewer to consider relations among numeric and alphabetic signifiers on the one hand, and lithic and human timescales on the other.
