The Petriverse of Pierre Jardin: by Paul A. Harris

One Zero

Pebbles with conspicuous lineations are frequently found on cobble beaches around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Presumably the lines are caused by mineral processes occurring during the region's cycles of subduction and uplift, erosion and re-deposition. The white oval ring around the peak of this pyramidical mudstone rock resembles another 'nothing' written in stone as a zero.

Playing off traditional viewing stone displays, Pierre Jardin set the stone in sand in a white marble tray, alongside a text that invites the viewer to consider relations among numeric and alphabetic signifiers on the one hand, and lithic and human timescales on the other.
