The Petriverse of Pierre Jardin: by Paul A. Harris

Nothing in Stone

The tagline of the Petriverse of Pierre Jardin is
"a rock garden where nothing is written in stone."

On a figurative level, "Nothing is written in stone" references the impermanence of the garden, the fact that displays appear and disappear unpredictably, and its overall design and aesthetic are constantly in the process of revision.

On a literal level, The Petriverse is a rock garden where Nothing is written in stone. In the creation story of the garden, Nothing was the lithic logos, the first word fashioned with beach cobbles. In a California rock garden, "nothing" triggers zen associations.  It was placed in the yard as a kind of koan, or a clue in a crossword that might trigger an associative response, “oh, nothing is written in stone.”
